RESEARCH INTERESTS
Mike MacCarthy's research interests focus on improving health and livelihoods in developing communities, primarily through improved access to water and sanitation facilities combined with hygiene behavior change (WASH). His research builds upon his significant experience living and working at the grassroots level in less-developed countries. He has spent a decade living and working in sub-Saharan Africa.

- WASH (Water, Sanitation, indoor Air, & Hygiene) – working with households and communities to improve access to water and sanitation infrastructure/services, better cooking/heating options to reduce indoor air pollution, and improved hygiene practices.
- Green Engineering – working with communities to implement technologies and practices that are energy efficient, cost-effective, and use appropriate renewable energy technologies.
- The Humanitarian-Development Nexus – working with partners and beneficiaries to find appropriate solutions in complex emergency/humanitarian contexts.
- Low-Cost Technologies – assessing/evaluating, developing, promoting, and working with beneficiaries to implement low-cost solutions that improve their health and livelihoods.
